Kde4 desktop resets itself after logout

Ok, I'm at the end of my rope here. I've now killed three days fighting with this.
It's pretty sad if I can't even have a normal desktop.
After arranging all icons and spending hours setting preferences, I log out and then when I login and startx I get this (image attached).
One of the last actions I attempted was trying to add KCalc to my desktop.
As you can see I clicked 3 times on Add to Desktop in the Kde menu and no icon showed up on the desktop, until this, and my original desktop gone!

Yesterday, I started, or so I thought, with clean Kde configuration, after deleting .kde.
But now I see that it stores stuff under .config and there is also .local/aconadi.
So what else do I need to delete to get a fresh, clean Kde setup?
