kde3.3.2 sound problem

Using KDE3.3.2 and 2.4.28 kernel. CMI PCI souncard
When I reboot and log in as a user and run startx, the kde progress box comes up and the startup music starts to play. As it gets to "restoring session", 33% the sound stops. After that no sounds from any thing. Logout and restarting kde produces no sound at all

Login as root causes very distorted sound at the 33% point.
If I go to control centre and try to modify the sound server settings I get a kde hang that I can only get out of with ctrl-alt-bkspace

Deleting the .kde directory has fixed this

It appears that upgrading the PC from KDE3.2 via 3.3.1 and then two versions of 3.3.2 has messed up the various KDE settings files which are in /home/username/.kde and /root/.kde.
Deleting the .kde directories makes kde start again from scratch.

I did try just deleting just knotifyrc (underneath .kde/share) which has been mentioned in a thread about 3.3.1, but that did not fix the problem
