KDE, what to do after upgrading from 13.1 to 13.37
Some time in the past after upgrading from one version of Slackware to another, I remember having issues using the previous version's .kde directory. This was remedied by removing that directory and letting KDE recreate it followed by me painstakingly migrating files one by one to get all my settings, mail, etc. under the new version of KDE. Is this the case with the upgrade from 13.1 to 13.37 and is there a better way that I'm missing?!
i upgraded without issue on kde... everything worked fine but when i tried to apply some changes on the system configuration ( system settings menu of kde 4.5) some stuff got messed up and it said something about the default settings been unavailable or something... so of course i deleted .kde folder and reconfigured the whole thing.
That's what I'm afraid of... .kde folder has a bunch of stuff like my e-mails, as well as other settings that I would rather not have to migrating to a new .kde if I don't have to... guess that's something that you'd have to find out by backing up and running.
I upgraded two machines over the last couple of days. Both had KDE on them and both came through pretty well unscathed. The only things I noticed were:
1. The Quicklauncher widget I use seems to have changed, so the sizes of my icons were different and more awkard to adjust.
2. On on of the PCs I had experimented a bit with "Activities" and had a widget that switched me between the two activities I had defined. This did not seem to work and I will just re-create the activities and the widget if I feel the need to use this functionality.
3. First time around KDE took a while to boot for all users, but subseuqently all was fine.
4. New KDE settings seem to have inheirted old ones where it matters to me (Desktop Indexing, Strigi etc disabled).
I guess your experience with upgrading will depend on just how much KDE customisation etc you have done.
Haven't really done much customization outside of the KDE settings... in fact, I rarely use any KDE apps other than KMail. Decided to start up KDE using my 13.1 .kde folder and so far so good. Things did take a while to start, even more so now with all the new fonts I added. We'll see as time goes on and with subsequent startups of KDE.
