kde themes

I noticed most themes on kde look all say for mandrake, or suse, or some distro. Does it really matter what distro you have, or just the version of kde? Do they all have their own ways to install? What directory should the source be downloaded to? I want to improve the look of my system now that it is runnning nicely with 2.6.10

Most of them that do specify a distro do so because the download is a package for that distro. I've noticed on some they will only give rpm's and will not give the source.

Generally, kde-3.2 and greater themes need to be compiled. just download them, unzip and cd into the directory. Make sure you install them to the kde prefix (which on slack is /opt/kde).

I saw there is a directory for wallpapers, but not for themes. But I did see in

/home/user/.kde/apps/thememanager

should anything go there? Does it matter where in /opt/kde it goes? Should I just create a new directory called themes?

The new KDE theme manager is not fully functional yet, but you can download sources and install by doing,

./configure --prefix=`kde-config --prefix`
make
make install

By doing as above, the themes are installed into the right KDE directories on your system and you can choose the syle you want to choose from Kcontrol -> Appearance & Themes.

I did that, but don't see anything in appearance and themes

edit: So theme manage under appearance and themes doesn't work right? I just go to each option such as icons, color, etc...?

Appearance and Themes -> Style, then select the style you want to use, there is a drop down list there. It partially works coz you can use it to configure certain aspects of styles, icons etc.
