kde splash screen not changing
i've downloaded a few kde splash screens, and no matter how i install it, it goes back to the default splash screen. i've installed it by using the installation "Add..." and installing the tar.gz package, (which installs it to ~/.kde/share/apps/ksplash/Themes/),, i've tried installing it to /opt/kde/share/apps/ksplash/Themes manually, and also tried manually installing it to ~/.kde/share/apps/ksplash/Themes/. i try setting kde to use it with control center, but it never works. i can see it and test it in control center, it just won't stay when i set kde to use it. what could be the problem? i'm using slackware-current. thanks for any help

~/.kde/share/apps/ksplash/pics
make a directory called pics. this is what Slack uses........ |
well i tried that after seeing your post on another thread similar to this, but it didn't seem to work. i unpacked the splashs screen folder to ~/.kde/share/apps/ksplash/pics/..... the splash screen doesn't show up in control center when i do that, however, and it still doesn't use the desired splash screen when booting up. what am i doing wrong?

You have to install the compressed file (*bz2 or *tar.gz) from the KDE control center. KControl => Appearance & Themes => Splash Screen => Add . Once installed you have to select it from the options listed or else it'll keep loading the default.

what version of KDE is that you are using. It's a strange coz I have never had that problem on Slack 9.1 or 10.

i was using kde 3.2 up until a few hours ago. i thought maybe updating to 3.3 would fix the problem, but it didn't...not sure what the deal is. is there a config file or something that i could manually edit so that ksplash chooses the splash screen that i want? thanks for the quick replies
|
The config file showing the selected spalsh screen is ~/.kde/share/config/ksplashrc. I think you need to change the name so that it matches an installed splash screen of your choice i.e. change where is says "Default" to a name of the spalsh screen of your choice.

is being installed on my system..........and they ALL work just fine thanks. |
manual install
Thats another way of doing it, but it's not so different from installing through the control center, becuse if you look in your .kde folder, you will still know what has been installed on your system.

well...i found ksplashrc and inside it had this
[KSplash] Theme=Default i changed default to = flat (the name of the splash screen i want to use), and....reboot...nuthin. same thing as before. what the hell is going on? |
it's really baffling, there is obviously something wrong somewhere. One last suggestion I have is to login into a console (don't start kde), move .kde and .kderc to .kde_old and .kderc_old. Login into KDE by running "startx" and kpersonalizer will start, select the options you want and then try to install the splash screens via kcontrol. Logout, log back in again and see if it works. hopefully it will. If it doesn't you can always restore your old .kde and .kderc from the backups you have.

nope, still didn't work =(. it doesn't work when i log into kde with my root account either...i have no idea what the problem could be....any way i'm missing a package or something?

your situation has baffled me. I don't think I can be of much assistance to you, but if i get a possible solution, i'll post it.

I had the same problem. I finally was able to add a splashscreen by creating a new subdirectory under /opt/kde/share/apps/ksplash/Themes, naming it for my splashscreen. Then I untarred the tar.gz archive there. Finally, I had to borrow a Theme.rc file from one of the KDE-included themes and edit it to reflect the name of my splashscreen. (There was no Theme.rc included in the archive I downloaded from kde-look.org. Maybe the one you're using includes this.)
This approach wasn't very pretty, but it was, um, pretty *slack*, if you know what I mean. BTW, the splashscreen I added is the Slackware one. It looks great. |
