Mine disappeared as I was trying to rearrange its widgets. Does anyone know how to rearrange widgets on a KDE 4.2 panel, how to reinstall a previously uninstalled panel, or where to find any usable documentation for KDE 4.2? KDE 4.2 doesn't seem to be as terrible as KDE 4.0, but that's only because 4.0 was so terribly terrible. (Have Redmond terrorists hijacked the KDE project?)
Right-click on the desktop and select "Add new panel". You can then fully customize your panel by adding widgets to it. By clicking on the icon at the left end of the panel, you can activate the options needed for resizing and position the panel, and moving the widgets present in the panel. The KDE users community is a great resource for getting into KDE 4: http://userbase.kde.org/Tutorials
Thank you for your reply. As the menu for that right-click action had been set to "folder view" that and other options did not present itself. Once changed, though, it allowed the Panel to be replaced, but empty, and the replacement Tray Applet insists on commandeering most of that replaced Panel. I'm now trying to discover the secret formula for restoring the default Panel: Does anyone know of the applicable configuration files and settings? This is Slackware64 13.0.
This deletes your plasma settings, so you'll get the default configuration back. If running all the 3 commands at once doesn't work, try typing them in manually and wait a few seconds before running the next command.
(Note that the $KDEHOME environment variable may not be set. Try ~/.kde (Fedora, Kubuntu Intrepid, Debian, upstream default) or ~/.kde4 (OpenSUSE, Kubuntu Hardy and several others).)
Thank you. That worked. The <KDEHOME> variable seemed to have been set on my system (Slackware64 13.0), but the <rm> command only worked for the path <~/.kde/share/config/plasma-applesrc>. The command <plasma> did restore the Panel with the default settings. I should add here that mine is a single-user system, so I don't know what the consequences of these actions would have been had a specific user employed them on a multi-user system. I did visit the "userbase" site as suggested and found there still more substantiation for my longstanding suspicion that software organizations seldom allow their best and brightest minds to molder at such base assignments as writing documentation or clearing out the company frig.
