KDE on Slackware 9.1

I have an old Dell Latitude CPi D300XT and haven't been able to find a good distribution for it for the longest time. I prefer KDE as a desktop and like the newer versions of it best. I have just finished installing Slackware 9.1 (I have to use the older versions of a few distros because the laptop has a crap cd drive that won't work in 2.6), and in the installation it said it was installing KDE. In other distros, the command startkde would at least give you the error that KDE couldn't connect to the Xserver, but now it is giving me a command not found error. If it has any meaning, I decided against installing gnome to save hard drive space. How can I get KDE running?

On a sidenote, my laptop uses an ancient Neomagic Magicgraph video chip, which supports 1024x768 with 16 bit color, which is a problem because Linux always tries to use 24 bit. How can I change this in this distribution? (a how-to I found for this specific laptop suggests using the command xf86config, but I get a command not found error)

First, if you need a 2.4 kernel for your CD drive, you should be aware that even Slackware 10.2 has a 2.4 kernel as the default - and it comes with a recent KDE of course.

Second, if your "startkde" returns "command not found" it would be obvious that you did not install (all of the) KDE packages. Did you select the "kde" package-set when installing?

By the way, Slackware 10.2 no longer has Gnome onboard, so you might try doing a "full install" of Slackware 10.2 to be certain you don't miss any of the packages you need.

The easiest way to start KDE is to run xwmconfig to set KDE as your default window manager if it is'nt, then run startx to start xwindows.

I'll do that. I'm downloading 10.2 now.

PS: did you run xf86config as root?
