KDE not Shutting Down

New Problem different computer. I had my other shutdown problem solved by uncommenting in the etc directory. Now my problem is on a different computer with KDE I log out and click on the end session when It does I get to a blank screen and thats it not to my command prompt or anything. I have tried cntrl c cntrl d still will not give me the command prompt. I have to shut the system off by the power button then it takes forever to restart because system was not shutdown properly.

1. Ctrl-c stop a program on console.
2. Press CTRL+ALT+F1 go switch on a console. There you can login as root
3. Check /var/log/messages or /var/log/warn for anything uncommon.

If you normally login to the GUI (and you don't use a command line login followed by startx), you may need to use CTRL+ALT+F6 to get to a console. On my slackware 10.2 box the only console to re-spawn in run level 4 is console 6.

Neither one of these ideas worked, I still just get a blank screen after trying to end kde session not bringing me back to # promtph or a $ prompth just blank screen.

Is the box on a LAN? If so and you have sshd running, try using ssh to get in and kill the X server and/or kdm to see if that gives you back control. Sorry I can't suggest something else to run locally.

Are you running the radeon framebuffer with the proproetary ATi fglrx X driver? This will cause the problem you describe on shutdown - the only workaround in that case being to disable the framebuffer.
