KDE-Multimedia from source ( kmix only needed )
Hi, I've just started installing KDE from source on my LFS system and would like to have only Kmix from the KDE-Multimedia package built. Is there any way, option ? I didn't seem to find it in my sleepy state. I know the question is more related to the LFS forum but I think the build rules apply on Slackware too, and always trust Slackers more than anyone. Thanks.

you can build kmix by running the following commands form the kdemultimedia root directory.
Code:
./configure
cd kmix
make
make install
you will need to change any configure or install options to meet your needs.

...aaron
**edit**
this works for kmix, but not all of the kde packages

hi drkstr,
Really? You can just download the multimedia, extract it and then pull out and use only one program? That's awesome I'd really like to know, thanks in advance.

Yup. You need to ./configure the entire kdemultimedia from the root directory, but you can build kmix by itself by running make from the subdirectory. I used 'make install DESTDIR=/my_directory' to create a sperate kmix Slack-package. This doesn't work for everything though, right now I'm trying to figure out how to build KDM from the kdebase package by itself. Unfortunately it wasn't as easy as kmix.

Oh ok, thank you DRKSTR, it's still good to know, I can see myself trying that out for a thing or two also.

Yup, that worked alright. Thanks alot drkstr. Oh, and drkstr, I see you have quite a bit of experience with LFS/BLFS/... I would have another question, and didn't want to open another thread just for this. I've tried out the Development LFS book and used gcc 4.0.3 as in the book, after finished when I tried to install my Nvidia drivers I got an error something about kernel compiling with gcc version, can't remember exactly. Anyway it seems to me that I can't build the Nvidia drivers if kernel is compiled with 4.x gcc version ? If I follow the LFS development book and use gcc 3.4.6 version instead of the 4.0.3 would the other programs compile or the versions used there need gcc 4.x ? Have you any ideea on that ? And if gcc 3.4.6 works you know any patches I should apply for it to work ? Thanks.
And can I use ReiserFS instead of ext3 by building the reiserfsprogs instead of e2fsprogs ?

I am not familiar with gcc-4.x but I have heard it will cause problems with Nvidia drivers. You might run into problems if you start using different gcc versions for various core system files. I would redo the entire thing with gcc-3.x if you decide to go down that route.

Yeah, I was talking about a redo. Starting from scratch all over again and instead of using gcc 4.x like the boox say's I'd like to use gcc 3.x.

The book says to use gcc-4.x? Maybe the HLFS book is different, I don't seem to remember using that version of gcc. I've never actually done the regular LFS book.
You can give it a shot, but not following an LFS book directly can be hazardous to your health unless you are real familiar with Linux. Maybe consider working HLFS instead (it uses gcc-3.x)? Although it can be chalenging in it's own regard.
Good luck!

Yes, the development LFS book uses gcc 4.0.3 ! I've downloaded gcc 3.4.6 and all the patches for gcc 3.4.6 from lfs.org for it and I'll give it a shot, it's worth trying. Then if it doesn't work maybe I'll try more or use the HLFS (more like u said for a challange) , who knows!? Btw I've quitted the reiserfs ideea, better stick with the book on this, for now.
