KDE init failure... what's missing?
 

Hello folks,

I am brand new to linux and installed slackware on an old laptop with a 3 GB hard drive. Because of this, I was "selective" during the package installation to save space.

Well, I was too selective. When I try to run KDE, there is an init failure reported because of a missing file "libqt-mt.so.3".

I assume is was in a component I chose "no" to during install.

In an effort to remedy this I am installing the full KDE package again (hoping this file is in there somewhere). If it isn't, should I also re-install the X package?

Also, I really only want a basic desktop (the other GUIs fail to load or freeze too), but I would like a mostly GUI IRC client to run. Does anyone have suggestions for doing this?

Should I use the package manager to remove the old, partial KDE install before re-installing or will the files simply over right?

Okay,

I got some help. the qt library is a part of X11. Do I need to re-install the whole X package or just build the qt library? If so, is there a simple way to find out where it is?

qt is actually a part of the kde directory when installing slack. if this is something you opted out of, you can grab it from the kde directory, and install it as root using the command

I am getting the hang on theis.

I got KDE to run now, but some other desktops need some X11 crap. Thanks for the tip on the individual package installs...

I think i am figuring things out faster than the responses, which is bad for you, but great for me!
