KDE i486 or i686
I have a Pentium 4 CPU, so what package should I use, i686 or i486, or are both the same?

yknott 05-09-2004 07:13 PM

i386 or i486 for your 80486 cpu

slackMeUp 05-09-2004 07:49 PM

very cute yknott...

i486 will work on any processer greater then a 486...
i686 will work on any processer greater then a Pentium Pro...

You want the i686.

there is an i686 set ??? how'd i miss that?

anyway slackMeUp is right, i686 if it's there, i run the other one ... because i didn't find the other one and was grumbling, but hey, it too works, plus this p3 isn't that fast that it'd make that much difference ... or am i looking at that the wrong way around??

if I use i686 for my P4 machines, will KDE (and other packages for that matter) run faster?? I guess they prob would but I just want to make sure. Thanks.

I would use the official slackware versions available on the mirrors :-)
That way you know they were built properly and work with your system.

if there is speed difference, it'd be slower since i686 is better optimized for your cpu.

The Official Slackware packages are i686 optimized but will run on i486. I don't think you would se a noticeable difference. They may be slightly bigger.
