Hi all
I've been using 9.1 for several years and am having a problem that I am not sure how to fix. There are two of us using the computer- I log in and use Fluxbox and Joane logs in and uses Gnome. She used KDE at first, but she accidently deleted something that now causes many error boxes to open when you terminate a program. I switched her over to Gnome and was good to go until yesterday. Gnome will not open- just comes to the grey screen with pattern and cursor. I can change her WM and they work but she wants gnome back. At the same time I'd like to fix KDE for her too.
My question is this. I want to reinstall KDE and Gnome and am not sure what I need to do.
I use pkgtool....do I need to remove KDE and Gnome first? I am not sure which packages to remove. Should I find a newer version of KDE and Gnome and install it? HOW can I convince Joane to switch to Fluxbox???
Did Joane had root permissions? If she had and she deleted anything related to Gnome or KDE, then you will need to reinstall them. On the other hand, if she did not have root privileges (nor she should. Most users don't need it anyway, besides the admin), then you don't need to reinstall anything. Most likely, her config files got messed. Try removing your config files located at her /home/ folder. Usually, config files for both Gnome and KDE start with a dot (hidden files).
For example, I am, let's say, "Alex". My home is located at /home/alex. By deleting .gnome* and .kde* files, I should have a new, fresh gnome/kde desktop next time I log in. Example:
Hey Alex-
Thanks for the speedy reply. I got gnome working just before reading your post. The only thing I did was add:
bgset -c /home/jones/Asian_Blue.jpg to her .xinitrc file. I had the jpg in one of my files so I copied it over to her side. When I logged in jones (command line) then typed 'x' (alias for startx) I realised that I hadn't changed wm so it booted to KDE....so exit kde and back at the jones prompt, I did xwmconfig and switched to gnome and hit x and for some reason gnome starts up fine but with the original background that Joane had used before the problem yesterday! Why Asian_Blue.jpg didn't show as background is a mystery as is why its working now! I am not going to touch a thing......
Would your suggestion fix the KDE problem with the crash boxes popping up everytime you exit a kde program? I'd still like to fix that.
thanks
Neil
Ooo... You may want to take care with these commands; I'm not sure about gnome, but KDE stores agenda-files, and some other possibly important stuff too, in the .kde folder. For instance, the default path to the KOrganizer agenda-file is
~/.kde/share/apps/korganizer/std.ics
