KDE and Gnome desktops
I am fairly new to the linux world and have chosen Slackware to be my OS of choice for linux. I have a question:
Does Slackware 9 support the Gnome and KDE desktop environments? If so, how do I install them? |
Yes, when you install slack, it will ask you for the packages you want to install, choose the KDE package (for KDE, of course), and GTK package for GNOME (I'm pretty sure about this, but not confirmed because I don't use Gnome).
To be on the safe side... you might want to install EVERYTHING... and then use pkgtool to remove packages you don't need. |
After Installation of Slackware 9...
Thanks for the info...
However, I have another question: After I install Slackware 9, and the computer reboots, I come to a prompt that wants a user, I can't seem to get past it. The system keeps telling invalid login. I have installed Slackware 9 with all packages. Any tips would be appreciated... |
Did you create a user during install?
If not, login as: root ,using the password you made during install, if you didnt make one, just hit enter. |
root
then the root password it asked for near the end of the slack 9 install process. The command "adduser" will let you add user names and passwords. after that you'll need to run xf86config or xf86setup (i don't recall which atm) and go thru the setup process. then the command "start x" will start up whichever gui you chose during the install as your default. There's much more to learn of course but one step at a time =) Rob |
its xf86config but you shouldnt have to do that with slack 9, or at least i didnt have to, also, you should remove all kde packages(it sucks), set up gnome, then download dropline gnome from www.dropline.net/gnome, it is by far the best looking/best performing gui. all you do when you have the tgz is installpkg dropline.... .tgz then type dropline-installer. seriously yall you should check it out it kicks ass.

Id leave KDE in, the libraries at least, to help compatability with other programs. Many good programs need them.
And dropline GNOME sucks. Just stick with the packages that come w/ Slackware. |
aye I used dropline gnome in 8.1 but I have gnome 2.2 with slack 9 working sweet and beautiful now.
