The problem of KDE 4 (general versions) is that is consumes memory, the KDE version 3.5 it was real fast, real estable and it consumed little memory. XFCe will be my choice for now :1 hope KDE team will revive the glory of the past 3.5 version.

It doesn't consume much memory for me, but yeah depends on what app you are running.
Conky says ~+270mb whe the pc is recently restarted and with KDE4. So, really, it is not so much memory. One thing I don't like is the delay to show the tray icons and volume control. Although my system is some years dated I wouldn't not expect this.

I really don't know the "why," but after disabling akonadi, strigi, and nepomuk (where do they get these names ) there has been a definite improvement in performance.

Can you please mark this thread as solved now? Not to mention the topic subject is pretty disturbing.

Nope.
Having to disable 3 of the "new & advanced features" of KDE 4.xx is hardly a proper solution.
However, to appease those "Oh, so sensitive" among you that can't bear to hear anything that could remotely be considered a negative comment about Slackware, I did change the topic title.
You might check the very first sentence in the first post of this topic.
Sheesh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, since disabling akonadi, strigi, and nepomuk, there hasn't been a freeze or any video problems.... so far. Hardly a proper remedy, but I'll take it for now.

Good to hear you sorted out your lock-up issues. I think this is a valuable thread. I'm not running KDE atm, but, I may in the future...you never know.
Strigi was definitely gobbling resources on my system (process name nepomukservice iirc) taking 95%, 30% mem (300mb) and its index file under .kde is 1gb and growing...

Update.
I've installed the KDE 4.3.1 packages from "vbatts" (Thank you) and all of the problems I was having with 4.2.4 have disappeared... so far. It is a little early to tell, but things are looking good!
