the best way is to kill the X server...
edit the file etc/inittab and one of the first lines probably is like this
id:4:initdefault:
you have to change the number 4 with another (lower) number so when you boot your system you will not load the default display manager. i cannot tell you whats the right number because it changes in each distribution.
