dracolich, thanks for the tip. The output you saw above was from being logged in as root, starting up X, and then trying to call up k3bsetup via konsole. I only used konsole because the k3b setup option was not available through any of the menus--like it was when I login to X as a user. Weird.
I'll try a reinstall of some sort, but I was using the official cds (via bittorrent by way of slackware.com). The installation went off without a hitch.
