just intalled slack some problems
I just installed 9.1 slackware, and I have to say,
it was rather easy, I am having trouble in a few spots though, i'll just explain: all 2 cd installed flawless, my problem is in it wont boot up kde or gnome it only lets me log in as root in console mode i can see all my programs in bin and sbin, note: in the install it never asked me to set up other users my partition set up goes as follows: 1 gig swap, 10 gig / and 117mbr partitions, /////////////////////////////// is my problem that i dont have a home account? is that why it does not ask me to set up a user, =========================================== also how can i get slack to do a dual boot with xp on a ntfs file system? it does not seem to recon ntfs it can see the fat however, ============================================== if none of the above makes sense I want to beable to boot into kde, and have a dual boot with xp under ntfs |

Log in as root, then let's issue a command like: foosystem# useradd foouser Now, we need to set password for user, so let's try: foosystem# passwd foouser Now, we know the user needs a /home subdir, so let's try: foosystem# mkdir /home/foouser and follow this with: chown foouser /home/foouser and chgrp users /home/foouser Now you've got a regular flavor user you can use day-to-day. See what window-manager starts (with normal user logged in you should be able to use 'startx')...then we can work on editing /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc symbolic link to choose window manager. Quote:
If you using NTldr then it's easy. It's likewise easy with lilo or grub, but we need to know what you got now before we decide a course of action. Quote:

adduser xwmconfig $editor /etc/inittab Slack should recognize NTFS partitions automatically, though you would have to mount them in order to see them. And it should dual boot 'automatically', assuming you installed LILO properly in the install process. If not, edit /etc/lilo.conf and do '/sbin/lilo'. You have to give more details about what's going on. 'I do X and Y happens' more than 'I can't X and want to Y'. |
Well said digiot! useradd is past! Long live to adduser! :P
and just adding something to the end of digiot's post, at least you need to let us know how your HD is partitioned... which partitions are ntfs and which are not. give us some background to have our work done! :D |
solved issue with dual boot primitave but i kinda like it
here is how i solve my problem:
I reinstalled lilo to boot from floppy, and kept my mbr untouched, ============================================= how can I make mutable disks in case the orginal one goes bad any answers thanks, or is there a better way? my hds go like this; wd 40 gig with ntfs for xp/ along with my slack partitions on the same hd////// looks like this: /xpntfs20 gig/mbr ntfs100mb/swap 1gig slack/19gig root slack/ =========================================== note: after using mandrake, rh , (because of the gui install) I have to say again that slack seems to be the best, The so called scary install went smooth and fast! I love the speed at boot up,(about 10 seconds on amd 1700+) When I go to download packages seems anything will work on slack, wow I'am sold so far, 9.1 came with gnome 2.4 and the latest kde too, All the other so called easy disros don't, I will continue my so far wonderfull journey in slack thanks for all the help so far, sincearly a linux newbie who went in spite if the warnings, ============================================= |
