javaVM in 10.1 slack dist does not work

Hi,

I installed last week slack 10.1 from binary iso distribution. None of the browsers (they're all the same nearly - mozilla, netscape, firefox too) works with java. Here is some info.

====

bash-3.00$ mozilla h-t-t-p-:-/-/-www-java.-com (someone made the stupid rule that urls cant be in here)
>>>>

I tried to link to /usr/lib/jre1.5.0_04/plugin/i386/ns7-gcc29/libjavaplugin_oji.
although I have gcc 3.3.4 (?) so .. did not make a difference.

It looks like javaVM looks for some /lang/ files but there is no such dir in the distrib. of j2re ???

is this a prob with the library version perhaps ? anyone else had this problem?

I already tried upgrading to firefox :( same prob.
tried upgrade to jre1.5_04 :( same prob still.

Who has this running on a clean slack 10.1 dist ?
Did it run on slackware 10.0 ?

After Slack 2.8 I have used other distributions. So I would like to know the latest version
under which this still worked ok.

Thanks.

Does anyone know what to make of this ?

Fairly new to Slackware, but I use 10.1 and followed the instructions and had no problem installing java

That rule is there for a very good and valid reason, the
fact that you don't know it doesn't make the rule stupid,
but you ill-informed ;)

The reason is to stop spammers from promoting web-sites.

Works here, on more than one machine, with both firefox and
mozilla... and ever since Slack 8 (which is when I moved from
SuSE to slackware).

Does your java as such work? Got java source to compile,
or class-files to run?

One thing I do notice is that the version of your java
differs from the one on slacks CD ...
./slackware/l/jre-1_5_0_01-i586-1.tgz

Cheers,
Tink

This seems to happen when the machine had Java updated. Look for directories called /mozilla-1.7.6/plugins and firefox-1.0.4/plugins. These SHOULD contain a softlink to the Netscape Java .so plugin. Use locate to find the real location of the plugin and create a new softlink with ln -s

Thanks 4 all replies

Thanks Bluenoser, it is good to know it should work. It usually all works out of the box. It must be because of the stuff I had on my home disk. I'll try to make a new account and test that.

Thanks Tinkster, Sorry for my remark. I got really ticked off, since i had the command as part of the question with the URL to show the error messages generated. Then your protection kicked in, and again,
... Is this really keeping the spammers away some ? I guess they do for you. Keep up the good work. I appreciate it.

Davidsrsb, I have done the linking, checked them. It des not seem to be the problem. But from your answers I see that I have to keep hacking the system till it works. I have later version because thats what I installed when the one out of the box did not work. Also checked things like enabling java in the browser, etc.

OK ... I just upgraded my java to the same version, and it's all sweet.

Next question to ask is which target directories for mozilla you are
using, are you still using the same mozilla that came with slack, or
did you upgrade that as well?

Cheers,
Tink
