Java and konqueror

I searched the forums but found no help so decided to post. When I installed Slackware 10.2 it kept giving an error of how it couldn't install the JRE so I decided to leave it out till I got my install finished then install it later. Well that time has come :D I want to download and install the Java Runtime Environment and have it working with Konqueror if possible. I guess I could go with firefox but I prefer to use Konqueror. Please help me as I'm quite new to Linux.

Using the slackware package is preferable, as it is simpler to keep it updated in future.
For some reason that I have forgotten, i installed java from Sun, but I would recommend using the slackware package if possible.
To download the package, go to a slackware mirror. The java JRE is in the l directory, eg

ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/slackware/slackware-10.2/slackware/l/jre-1_5_0_04-i586-2.tgz

so once you downloaded it (nearly 30MB!) you would cd to the directory the package is in and

installpkg jre-1_5_0_04-i586-2.tgz

If you already tried this, then post the error message you got.

Alternatively you could install from Sun.

http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp - select the Linux (self-extracting file)
and follow the instructions next to the download button.

Generic packages that are not slackware specific tend to install in /usr/local by default,
whereas slack packages generally install in /usr. don't worry about this, but bear it in mind
because if konqueror does not find the java executable, you will need to open konq, go to
settings>Configure konqueror>Java & Javascript and set the path to the java exec

eg /usr/local/java/jre1.5.0_04/bin/java

if you install firefox, the procedure is slightly different, instructions here:

good luck,
