I use slackware64-current on my main box, and slackware64 on the stable, never crash box.

On the main box, I like to diddle with gimp-2.99 which is gimp-master. The gimp requirements of babl and gegl are switching to meson/ninja for building. I'd like to see ninja and meson on slackware64, which means slackware-14.3 or maybe 15.0.

I see on my subscription slackware64 dvd that the kernel dates from 2016, so I'm guessing it's time for a new release.

You are missing the point. Slackware-14.2 was released in 2016. It's time for slackware to come up for air again and release something that will be stable, and based as much as possible on slackware64-current.

I don't see anywhere that ninja/meson have been added to slackware-14.2. They're both in slackware64-current.

We know, Patrick knows, everyone knows. As it has been discussed here many times, the new stable will come out when it is ready. And my bet is, it will be based on slackware -current

I'm ready! I want to keep slackware as my distribution because it's close to the command line. Slackware64-current does it for me on the development box (this one)
but slackware-14.2 is really old in the tooth, and it is not keeping up with the rest of the world.

I'm chomping at the bit for a new release as well, but if it hasn't happened yet, it can only be because Patrick knows of a compelling reason.

10k Days was their last "awesome" creative effort, this latest (very) long-awaited album should have been called Recycle Bin, much like Metallica's last 2-3 releases (although Suicide & Redemption is a masterpiece (a pity they switched to Fractal Axe-FX - the guitars sound way too distorted&loud&dumb)).

In this respect, while not in a hurry myself, I hope the next Slackware release will be worth the waiting.

I am actually using Slackware 15.2 already, and it is very cool. But in order to use that, you have to be secretly invited, and you need to pass some very complex criteria and conditions. I cannot tell you how, because then I have to kill you.

But, one day, when it is ready, it will be released to the mass, although, usually, the version will be changed from the secret one. Stay tuned and praise Bob!

You long-term Tool fans are so hard to please! It would never have lived up to expectations. As a comparative new-comer, it sounds incredibly mature, more like a seasoned and more considered Lateralus. 10k days was just too mainstream sounding for me, too much of a crowd-pleaser. Maybe it's contextual.

I'm not in a hurry either, -current does the job fine for me on my laptop.

And my bet is, it will never come out. Why? Because the releases stopped, and everyone's still here. So the question is what's the benefit of a release? Everyone's just using -current. If that was a problem they'd have deserted.

Slackware64-current works very well indeed for me too on three desktops, and three laptops. I am happy that Mr. Volkerding is taking the time to get it right and build a stellar release. If you check out the changelogs for Slackware 14.2 and Slackware64-current you'll see that 14.2 is routinely provided with security patches and -current is in a state of furious development.

Slackware 15.0 will come when it meets Mr. Volkerding's standard for excellence. In the 15 years that I've been a Slacker our maintainer has always delivered.

You're right on both counts, this latest one is just recycled stuff, mature=boring, why bother releasing it when you could just enjoyed Lateralus & other older ones. Again, 10k Days was their latest good creative effort, refreshing and to some extent a little easy for the mainstream to embrace, but it was worth releasing.
Continuing the analogy, Slackware should release a release worth releasing

I'm fine with 14.2 for my use cases, the kernel is what bothers me a little and I'm planning to switch to 5.3 and maintain it on my own. Speaking of kernels, a topic that was extensively discussed in several threads after GKH published:

I believe I'll start using the latest stable and break the "tradition" to consider & use only the LTS releases. The kernel code looks pretty stable these days (past years), it's been a while since I experienced (& heard about) kernel stability issues.
