Look, I understand what you are saying, but one shouldn't have to dig around on a message board to find out if a linux distribution (or anything for that matter) is alive or dead.
Now, I admit commonsense is in short supply these days, but one should be able to go directly to the website that represents the distribution (product, service, whatever) and find out if it is still active. Period.

I dare you to send a cheque payable to Patrick Volkerding worth the walk to PO BOX 172, Sebeka, MN 56477 and find out if is cashed.
Other alternatives are:
PayPal donation
and
Patreon subscription

Yawn, put up and shut up.

I don't think the OP's question is unfair. The website says 2016 was the last update: most people would therefore think it was dead. I certainly would. But PV is a little eccentric [as is the userbase] and prefers to update people through the changelog. Not everyone knows that, I had to find it out here.

True, yet it doesn't take much digging around here. Just the first page this forum should be enough.

I do agree with your post back there at Post #13. That "2016-07-01" is a bit imposing. Then again, that link to ChangeLogs would be the next thing I'd check on visiting The Slackware Linux Project web page.

Unhappy

Prepare Slack... prepare Slack for "dead distro!" Remove SBo from /etc/slackpkg/blacklist, delete all bootloader entries, close the Slackware64 -current change log! Cancel the glibc-2.33 rebuild! Secure all packages in pasture...

The issue aren't those few who bothers to look around, find what looks as an active Slackware forum for them, and post a "smart-ass" poll there...

The real issue is that (probably) thousands more just visit the Slackware site, find those news from 2016 and just slip away, not bothering to look further.

No offense intended to anyone, BUT I believe that thousands and thousands of potential Slackware users are just sent away by this very official site.

And they will probably never come back, because their next visits would be on Ubuntu, openSUSE or Arch websites which are thousands times more consistent and rich as content.

Is Slackware dead in 2021?

IMNSHO, another way to check whether Slackware "dies" in 2021 in any fashion whatsoever is to monitor its DistroWatch HitsPerDay stats at https://distrowatch.com/ or https://distrowatch.com/table.php?di...tion=slackware.
Over the last year, Slackware's popularity by this metric alone has remained fairly consistent at around 33 HPD.

Am optimistic that there'd be a DW popularity gain when the next Slackware version gets released sometime this year

The best thing Slackware can do for Slackware is to release a stable version. I know it's close, but it's been too long. I've been checking this forum for a couple years looking for hints of when 15 might be coming - mostly in threads like this because god help you if you ask. When PV finally said something in November, I installed -current and joined his patreon. I have no idea, but I can't believe I'm the only person that felt that way. I know a lot of people here are fine living with -current, but that was not the experience that fit my needs - not without any light at the end of the tunnel at any rate. All PV had to do was communicate to change my tune (hint, hint).

I realize this is a troll-ish thread and I apologise for adding to it. I just don't understand why everyone gets so angry at these at this point. Maybe years ago when the releases seemed to be more regular it was "cool" to be indignant and replay "it will be ready when it's ready". I'm sure I have been guilty of the same. But after almost 5 years, that response has gotten old, turns away potential users, and likely hurts the person that you all swear you are supporting by sending people elsewhere.

The OP is obviously a troll - 2 posts total - title almost exactly the same as post from a year ago that ran for 30+ pages..

I know there are are serious issues around the website that make it hard to modify. Still I can't believe it would be that difficult to get a front page announcement out just saying; "Hello 2021 - release to follow soon - here some exciting things to look forward to in SL15 ...."

It would do an enormous amount of good. I know Pat has a lot on his plate but I really am baffled why such a simple obvious thing that can't really take longer than 20min can't get done.
