Plasma 5 is ready for inclusion. Its not perfect but it is stable. I don't get what the big deal is. No one is forcing anyone to use KDE. KDE 4 used OpenGL. My laptop video card couldn't handle all the pretty in KDE 4. Its not KDE 4's fault. I turned it off. KDE 4 worked fine after that. Its just how software development works. KDE 4 is obsolete. KDevelop4 is broken. Everything has moved on to Qt5.
Lets remove all the desktop environments/window managers and use runlevel 3! That will solve the problem!
Eric does excellent work on kde 5. However, I probably won't be using it either because Xfce works so well. Over the years I've ran into some nasty bugs with each version of kde and simply do not find it to be a reliable project to use. I have not seen the same breakage in Xfce ever so why switch to a desktop environment that could possibly lower productivity?
Same here, although i don't use xfce (i prefer awesome from slackbuilds as my desktop), but i i like to mix and match many of kde/xfce tools.
For example, Thunar for file management, but i also use many of the kde tools like kdenlive, marble, k3b, kde partition manager etc. Would be nice to have the 5.x versions of those in slackwares base packages.
Distribution: Slackware64-current with "True Multilib" and KDE4Town.

It would be nice to have just a "base kde install" option so one could run their favorite kde applications within another DE without having to install the entire one gig plus of kde files.
IIRC, in another thread, someone was kind enough to list the basic kde4 packages one needs to do just that.

They say that the Qt5 interface, specialy the QML part is rendered over OpenGL for optimal performance.
But this "excesive" usage of OpenGL has its darkside. Looks like a so called "desktop video-card" will offer lamentable performances with the modern Qt5.
I hope Patrick Volkerding will take note about this (mis)feature, and he will not force all of us to become gamers.
My laptop has an HD Graphics 520 chip, I can not play games on this laptop, and Plasma 5 still performs well. You listen to the haters too much.
Can I get an idea of how old the GPUs that are having trouble with Plasma 5 are?
OpenGL in general didn't really start getting consistent drivers until OpenGL 3, and ATI/AMD had notoriously bad OpenGL support until they started open sourcing their drivers.
If Plasma 5 is the only OpenGL application you run, then you'd obviously think it's a Plasma 5 issue. That doesn't mean it is.
I can confirm that my 2015 MacBook Pro (which I bought for OpenGL 3 development) has an integrated GPU and it ran Plasma 5 fine.
I had the possibility to test Plasma5 with built-in Radeon HD3200 (from AMD RS780G chipset), Radeon HD3100 (from AMD RS780V chipset), Radeon HD4250 (from AMD RS880G chipset), Radeon HD4350, Radeon HD5450 and Radeon HD6450. Same behavior everywhere.
All of them are OpenGL 3.0 (compatibility 3.3) excluding the last one, which is on OpenGL 3.1
The built-in ones are on AM2+ and AM3 motherboards (the RS880G chipset, Radeon HD4250)
The Radeon HD5450 and Radeon HD6450 are still on stock as brand-new in Romania and very used as desktop class video-cards.
Ironically, in one of my Intel min-PC, which is basically like an laptop, Plasma5 works fine with OpenGL 2.0 while support is for 2.1.

And your Plasma5 behave like a crap with those cards, unless they are gaming ones.
I suggest you to buy from eBay some cheap brand-new Radeon HD5450, and to test your Plasma5 builds with it, and you will see how "ready for inclusion" it is today.

Absolute nonsense. GPU-accelerated drawing has excellent performance.
Unless you're somehow using the software OpenGL implementation that comes with Messa.

I have also similar issues in an AM2+ system, with processor Athlon 7850, 4GB RAM and Radeon HD4350. Another system works fine, but it is an Intel one.

I always wonder who would ever buy Radeon... Me, never did and never will, Radeon has a history of bad Linux support.
If it does not work with Plasma, perhaps you'll get farther by telling the AMD people to do a better job at writing drivers. Apparently they are not so good at writing open source software as you think. Do they have a repository and a bug tracker? Then that's where I would start. Instead of shifting the blame to KDE. Stop buying AMD GPU's and that might convince them that they have to start taking Linux seriously.

You do not file bug reports at the packager. You only complain and don't bring evidence. Furthermore, I do not code the KDE software, I compile their software and package it so that you can start your rants faster.
