I'd be inclined to say yes. I know that some distributions do use different font handlng mechanisms, so that'd be my only caveat, otherwise, the other stuff should work. If you run into problems when you use the XF86Config file from Knoppix with Slackware, make sure all of the font paths exist, modify them if needed, then try again.

I know that Mandrake will have one or more different font paths, not sure about Knoppix. Give it a try, If it doesn't work, check the font path list first and go from there.

i've done that. it works.

for some reason the setup (xf86setup or config) which ever does it in text mode wasn't really working out. but the one that brings up a gui-ish screen worked out just fine. so i wanted to check for differences and copied my knoppix XF86Config file to slack and it worked just fine.

I'm glad you got it working. Generally the only sections that need changing are the monitor, video, mouse,~keyboard. I recommend just edit those sections in the new install, using the info from a XF86Config that is known to work. There are a lot of good comments in Slack9.1 config that could be helpfull later.
