Is it possible to take complete backup

I want to backup up the / excluding /home so that all the tweaking done and th programs installed can be restord as it were. I dont want to do it all over again when someday I screw my box.
So is there a way to do it.

He dude,

Yes, that is possible. if you have, for example a cd-writer or so. And it is very easy to configure.

read the following link.. and just configure according to that page:

http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue91/keates.html

i use that method, and it works just fine for me.

cheers

if your / is an other file system than /home you can copy the whole filesystem to a file
cp /dev/hda1 /home/rootbackup.ext3image

to restore files you can later
mount -o loop /home/rootbackup.ext3image /mnt/whatever

i've used this my self and copied stuff to a 200GB harddrive.. enough space.. never tested zipping the image afterwards, but it should work

With that backupthing.. i also found something else, which i have not tested yet.

http://mkcdrec.sourceforge.net/

that looks also pretty good.

this is the only solution i hav tested, and like mentioned before, it works pretty well for me:

i am at work, and i just a quick look at it... can't test it here, since i am using winxp@work

But it seems pretty similar yes. Anyway, that method i've tested works very smooth.

Let's say you use the thing at http://mkcdrec.sourceforge.net/

Does it use the whole filesystem, partitions, or selected directories. I'm hoping it's selected directories.

Why not use tar?
Code:
 tar -czlf /somepath/backup.tgz / --exclude /home
If you ever have to restore, just boot from a slackware CD, create partitions if necessary, format the partition and expand the tar file to the new file system. Mount and chroot to the new file system and run lilo and you're in business again. I image all my PCs at work this way and it hasn't failed yet. The syntax may not be 100% the same as I exclude different directory trees.

Ghost 2003 will work right? But wouldn't you need to reinstall LILO?
