Is it possible to install KDE 4.1 and keep 3.5 on Slackware 12.1?
Hi all,
Like the subject asks, is it possible to install KDE 4.1 to play with it, but still keep KDE 3.5? I currently easily run KDE, Window Maker, and XFCE without problems. It seems there should be a way to do that with two versions of KDE. What do you think? -Drew |
here's some notes about KDE4 in Slackware by Robby (http://kde4.rlworkman.net):

Yes, it is possible. However, you would have to rebuild Robby's packages to place them in certain locations (I've never used the -root option of installpkg, but this may be a possibility if you don't want to rebuild everything. However, your $PATH would probably need to be completely mutilated in order for everything to work if you do it that way). QT and KDE would need to be rebuilt to place everything in /usr/local OR in separate versioned folders under /usr. I'm not knowledgeable enough to elaborate on that, but it would be quite an undertaking if you want to try it.

This documents describes how to install KDE4 as a regular user but you can of course install it to /opt/kde for example. |
Hi all,
Okay, I'm starting to get the idea that building KDE is pretty complicated, so having two versions is very complicated. I'll take a look at Robby's packages with an eye toward building KDE in /opt and come back with more questions. Meanwhile, if anyone here is actually running KDE 4.1 in Slackware without losing 3.5, please chime in. Regards, -Drew |
Drew,
One of our other guys on cardinal, Vincent Batts (who's also a member of the same LUG as me), has been playing around with getting kde3 and kde4 to coexist. I don't know what its current status is, but have a look here: http://cardinal.lizella.net/~vbatts/kde4-coexist/ |
Thanks for the link, Robby.
I'll keep an eye on that link and see if I can figure out some more. Right now the KDE 4.1 directory is empty, which suggests that Mr. Batts may be working on it. Regards, -Drew |
thanks for the bump !
http://cardinal.lizella.net/~vbatts/...ist/kde-4.1.0/ is being populated as i type, with a few more packages shortly, for right now, use the k3b from the 4.0.98/kde/ directory cheers, vb |
Is anyone using these packages? It looks like great work!

Would you please post a follow-up when 4.1.0 is ready? Thanks, -Drew |
it's ready on the repository
i have download them all and i will try this packages today :) |
Hm... so far so good, except that in Control Center, the version displayed is still 3.5.9 (perhaps it was reading the old .kde instead of .kde4)
The Kicker is not yet customizable. I can't move the icon placed there. Virtual desktop for example. There's no way to move it when it's there. The Terminal (Konsole) also looses it's default prompt and i have to overwrite it again (no big deal though). Besides all of this, it works perfectly. Thanks to Vincent for the packages. |
I've been trying it as well. You can still reach the KDE 4 Control Centre by going to System Settings, but like Willy said, the normal menu entry takes you to the 3.5.9 one. And Amarok is very buggy (being alpha).
Thanks Vincent. |
Look at today's Slackware -current ChangeLog.txt ...
Packages for KDE 4.1 have been added to /testing, they contain a kde3-compat package so that you can keep running KDE3 apps (be sure to read the instructions!) Eric |
