Well, unfortunately I'm unable to report a logical conclusion to this thread. I ran a diff on the two config files for 2.6.10 and 2.6.11.8 and set all the differing lines in 2.6.10 that looked like they could have anything to do with my IDE controller/ DMA problems to look like 2.6.11.8. Compiled, and still no DMA.
mdarby: You mention DMA working with your VIA controllers on 2.6.11.x. I'd be curious to know if anyone got VIA controllers like mine to work with DMA on 2.6.10.
I would really like to be able to say, "hey, *this* was the problem - now I know." As it stands, just recompiling a newer kernel isn't a much better learning experience than a windows 'reboot, and hope it goes away.'
Distribution: Slackware 9.1 but FUBAR with packages I compile myself, and OpenBSD (not exactly a distro) on QEMU

You might have to dig deeper. For example, I used to be able to use fb with OpenOffice.org on 2.4.27, then all of a sudden 2.4.28 gives me nothing. I've checked, and it's the transition from rc2 to rc3 (or rc3 to rc4?? I forgot) that broke OOo + fb. But I found nothing related to the fb driver, so in the end I just forgot about it :P Maybe you've got a similar situation there.
