internet very slow
 
Hi all, very suddenly I started having trouble with my internet connection. It works, but is very slow.. I often have to click on a link several times before it will work, and then it just loads normally. It seems to either work right away, or not at all. I'm using a laptop with a wifi connection. I recently traveled to visit my family and did not notice the problem with their internet connection. And the other laptop here (with windows) does not have any trouble with the internet. I decided to check out tcpdump and am noticing some odd things going through there:

That kind of thing is flying by my screen while I'm not doing anything. When I make a request for a website it seems to just stop and do nothing.

I've never seen this problem, nor do I think I can solve this for you. Here are some thoughts anyway that might help.
1. Check your Duplex settings (set it to: auto)

As your logging indicates: "ethertype unknown" the following questions come to mind.
2. Are you're network packages encapsulated with for example PPPoE?
3. Have you been experimenting with Frame Relay

And finally
4. Did you recently updated or recompiled the kernel or drivers?

Hope this opens up some search directions.

If you have long periods of your browser's "Looking up..", it could be problem with ipv6. In that case you can avoid the problem by blacklisting ipv6 at /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Sorry for the late reply, I was out of town and have been busy with other things.

But this is still not resolved and kind of driving me mad :)

I've gotten some more information now. When I ping google.com it takes a very long time, but reports a short amount of time for the ping. When I ping google's ip address it behaves normally. So something's up with my DNS resolution.

Note that the first ping, with google.com, took much longer than the second, even though it's reporting comparable times. In fact, when I ^C to stop the ping, it takes a long time (5 - 10 seconds) to stop.

What's up with all the references to 169.254.0.0? Where's that coming from? And why on Earth do I have so many interfaces? Two of which are eth1? That might explain the problem there...

169.254.X.X/16 is a windows default IP address, lots of other devices and OS's use it because windows is so ubiquitous, so it's kind of a treated like a standard and is common when you are using DHCP, but haven't received an IP address.

If you are getting slow resopnse times when you ping URL's like www.google.com, but everything is fine when you ping an IP address, then it is likely a DNS issue. I noticed this when I first started using linux and was still dual booting. The resolution for me was to configure static DNS servers. I like 4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.3, 4.2.2.2 and 8.8.8.8. The first 3 belong to L3 and the last one is google's. There may be better DNS servers for you. If I were you I'd start with my ISP's, unless it's a box that moves around a lot like an on the go laptop or netbook.

You can look at /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf to see the list of interfaces on your system. /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 is where dhcpd gets called also I believe. http://www.slackbook.org/html/networ...ion-tcpip.html

It is a laptop, and eth1 is a wireless interface. Sorry, I should have specified. I've always just used my router - 192.168.1.1 and it's always worked fine. But maybe I've just been lucky.

How does one add or change a DNS server? I tried changing the contents of resolv.conf, but it got overwritten by dhcpcd.

Yeah I run that script when I am troubleshooting internet issues, and my router is listed in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf as the dhpc server.

Actually, it has entries for eth0 - eth3, with dhcp info entered for eth1 and everything else blank. Why are my logs reporting eth0 - eth5? And dual eth1's?

Hmm.. actually, am I confusing dhcp and dns? I know my router should be the dhcp server, that's how I set it up in the router settings. Not sure about dns.

Is dhcpcd being called by you or a program? It looks like using the "-R" switch will prevent resolv.conf from being overwritten.
