internet not working after slackware 10.0 install

First off, im new to this whole linux thing. Im running a dual OS (slack + windows xp) system, which works perfectly fine with windows.

However, there is no connectivity when using linux.

My connection comes from comcast digital cable directly into my pc, then out through a second NIC to another PC. My IP is assigned by a DHCP server.

The incoming connection NIC is detected as eth0, and has the correct physical address, as well as something about IP being assigned by DHCP.

The second NIC is not detected at all, which isnt a REAL big deal, but its kind of a nuisance.

the only real reason im running linux is for emacs, so i can do my c++ programming class homework at home, instead of driving to school and using their labs. I just have to use the internet to login to their network and edit my files.

if you have no real use for linux, but need just some basic functionality, have you tryed cygwin?

-- it could save you the trouble of having to reboot to slack every time you want to work on something (and thereby help to stabalize your network under your PC)...

You may like linux the more you use it, something I've found to be true. As far as your internet I had a big issue getting connected too. Just go to http://freshmeat.net and search for netgo... download the .tar.gz package and put it on a floppy. In slackware extract the package to your desktop. Then open a konsole and type
cd /home/[username]/Desktop/netgo.x.x/
./configure
make
su
make install
after all that goes through you have successfully installed it from source. Now open a new konsole and type netgo... you should be greated by a graphical screen where you can configure your TCP/IP connections. You'll then have to activate the connection.

oh im not saying i dont like linux, i love it so far.....i have some experiance with the UNIX system (mostly old sparc 10's and 20's) through the military, but ive been out of training for a little while and i cant really remember everything.

I would most likely go with linux exclusively after ive used it for a while, if it werent for the large variety of programs for windows.

1. Can you post your ifconfig output here?

2. Try dig www.google.com, check whether your machine resolve the name.

3. ping www.google.com, any reply?

4. What is the make and model of your second NIC?

ifconfig: only had lo....no other devices listed....thats a problem, but how do i solve it?

the dig and ping commands did not work either.

as for lspci and lsmod, i was unable to find those exact names, however, i tried ls pci and ls mod, and there wasnt much in there, it just said "pci" and "mod"
