intellimouse optical usb with sw10.1

How do I get it to work, I've tried some of the tips in here but it just won't work..

I can move the pointer but it only goes up/down, and that's when I move it left or right..

I have a fresh installed slackware 10.1 and a intellimouse explorer 4.0 pe connected to the usb port

is it possible that the 'hotplug' feature is messing with it or something?

when i had slack 10.1 out of the box, my MS optical/usb mouse didn't work either. when i slapped in my 2.6.10 kernel (and put in the 3 lines to xorg.conf for my wheel), everything was back to normal

Have a look at /etc/modules and see if usbhid is loaded before usbmouse. If not just edit the file to
usbhid
usbmouse
.
That worked for me in kanotix

My intella mouse works great except for scroll wheel, but it has the USB to PS2 converter on it.
I was trying to figure out how to fix the scroll when I found this post.
You could try to use a adapter on the mouse
