intel video driver crashing

Hi guys. I have the following issue with my intel graphics card. Every once in a while the X server would just crash. I can't tell you what exactly causes it. Last time after crashing it had this message in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old:

any suggestions? I use Slackware 13.37 (32 bit). I have disabled compositing as suggested in the CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT

Martinus2u 05-15-2011 01:24 PM

my only suggestion is to create a bugzilla report. That's what I regularly do for intel video. Only last night I updated a long standing flash video bug report. Yours might look similar to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31611 . I thought I had another one but I can't find it any more. That one supposedly was resolved in the intel driver.

what you can try is an upgrade to mesa-7.10.2 and libdrm-2.4.5 from slackware/testing.

On Slackware 13.1 I was having all kind of problems with Intel Graphic Cards, but it is working great on 13.37.
It only stopped working properly when I updated to KDE 4.6.3, which was solved by updating Mesa to the /testing version.

solarfields 05-15-2011 02:10 PM

i will give the /testing version a try, then! Shall I also upgrade the kernel with the one from /testing?

Didier Spaier 05-15-2011 03:36 PM

Dunno for Intel but for nVidia it definitely helps to upgrade the kernel if you upgrade the main X components. In fact it is even mandatory to use xf86-video-nouveau in /testing. May be the same apply for Intel?

solarfields:

When does this crash occurs? during moving/resizing an application on the desktop? Or just spontaneously?

solarfields 05-16-2011 11:15 AM

I would say spontaneously. Or sometimes after watching videos in youtube. On another machine (again intel chip) X crashes regularly after watching 2-3 youtube videos. I have experienced similar problems with Archlinux before. Only with intel, sometimes X just dies.

Also on my current machine, sometimes after the monitor has gone blank (after the xscreensaver), when I move the mouse, I see the cursor but black desktop, or sometimes my bottom panel appears on top. I have to pres Alt + F6 and then Alt + F7 and everything works fine again.

:banghead:

I am seriously thinking to just buya separate (relatively) cheap video card. But then again: ATI or Nvidia, if ATI: the open source driver or the catalyst, in case of Nvidia -- nouveau?

Seriously, would someone recommend a video card that will just work fine with its open source driver? Price limit is around 100 EUR.

I wouldn't touch ATI when running linux, but that may be just my bad experience. I would always opt for Nvidia with the proprietary driver. In one machine I have a fanless Zotac GF GT 240 ZONE that cost me around EUR 82 a year ago. It totally rocks and runs newish 3D games very nicely. And is totally silent while doing so.

deNiro 05-17-2011 04:57 PM

One question, did you have these problems with slackware 13.1?

I am asking this, because i use the intel icore3 internal graphics, and I have the same problems as you have. In slackware 13.1 i did not have these problems. I'm seriously considering a reinstall of 13.1.

I had them. At least X crashing. The other "exotic" things are new...

BTW, I came across this thread http://www.ubuntugeek.com/intel-grap...nty-users.html

So, in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d I created a file called intel-videoram.conf with the following in it:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "UXA"
VideoRam 258048
EndSection

Of course, I still dont know if this solves anything. I have to just wait and see if X will crash.

EDIT: Nope, doesnt help it just crashed!

thanks for the suggestion, i gave it a try
now i am waiting to see if X will crash

ventuno 05-19-2011 05:17 PM

I was having problems with Intel Graphic Cards which was solved by:
1- remove google-chrome
2- remove gkrellm
3- remove xscreensaver
The problem solved.

Slackware64 13.37
Acer Aspire 4738-6328
intel core i5
intel drive i915 arrandale.
