intel chipset on new laptop

I'm trying to set up a Lenovo T61 to dual boot Windows Vista and Slackware 12. The partitioning and Dual booting worked flawlessly, and the only thing I have left to do is configure the graphics and sound.
I have no idea how to do this
heres the relevant output from lspci:

00:02.0 VGA Compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev0c)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev0c)

00:1b Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

Do I need to configure the graphics card as a module or directly into the kernel?

How will it look as a device in xorg.conf?

should alsa be compiled into the kernel as well? I didn't see an option for intel-hda there, but it seems to work as an option when I compile it from alsa-drivers (outside the kernel, as an external module) - the only problem is that alsaconf doesn't work properly

anybody thats running a linux system on this chipset, please help!

It's a core 2 ... should I compile as x64?

and another thing, after a kernel recompile, the entire boot process is blank - it could be the whole runlevel, but I'm not sure. A bit annoying, but kdm comes up, so its not unusable.

thanks in advance

More then likely you will need to compile alsa outside of the kernel to get any sort of usable sound from that chip. Grab the devlopment asla that should give you the best results. Graphics drivers would be in X not in the kernel unless your talking about frame buffer drivers.

As for what to use you can try the i810 driver.

I have Lenovo n200 with same sound card.
With Slackware current I loaded the snd_hda_intel sound module with model=lenovo, and It works. You should look to thinkpad related options(maybe model=thinkpad)
For graphics, try to run xorgsetup, It will create a xorg.conf for you, then run startx

Have a look at www.thinkwiki.org - it outlines the solution to OP's problems.
ALSA 1.0.15 (which is in the latest kernel, but Slackware's libraries are 1.0.14a) has full support for intel's HD audio, and the video driver is already there in in xf86-video-intel-2.20 (2.21 coming in the next 14 days)

The Thinkpads have fantastic Linux support - best of luck in your continued Linux-on-Thinkpad endevour
