Intel ad198x soundcard and alsa: distorted "static" sound on mic input

I'm running current (32-bit) on an old-ish laptop and I'm trying to use the mic input. When I try

Code:

arecord | aplay

I get a distorted static sound. I'm trying to use soundmodem as a software TNC for an amateur radio station, but the diagnostic tools I'm using to tweak the levels can't even pick the packets out of the hash coming through the mic input.

Are there any know driver issues or anything else I'm not thinking of that could cause this, or is it more likely a hardware failure?

You do not say what model of laptop you are using, but it is possible that you may need to add a 'model=' option when loading the snd-hda-intel kernel module. This SlackDocs page may help. http://docs.slackware.com/howtos:har..._snd-hda-intel
