installing xp with lilo
Hello, Having a problem installing windows xp pro on a Sata type harddrive. I've done fdisk with slackware. I set the partitions to HFTS/NTFS, windows xp setup didnt recognize it, I removed all partitions, it went a little further in the setup but gave me the same error. "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer".
I'm trying to put windows xp pro on it with slackware 10.2 using lilo. However cant get past windows. Does anyone know what the partition type should be set to for windows and if I need more then one partition just for windows. I know the partitions types for linux system and linux swap. Any help appreciated. Thanks |
Did you try just leaving the free space as it is (i.e. not making a partition) and then seeing if Windows likes that? That should be ok at least. You need as many partitions as you want for Windows, if you only want one that's fine.

just let the windoze installer create its own partitions, create yours for linux and leave some space for that installer

Hi
You have to load extra drivers to recognize the sata disk when you want to install windows. I think its F6 you have to press while booting from the install CD. I.e. the problem is not lilo. It's just windows who has to be told it should look for a sata drive. Good Luck! |
which cd ?
Press F6 when booting the windowx xp cd or slackware? and Yes I removed all partitions and windows didnt recognize my harddrives I'll try the f6 thing
|
It's the windows CD.
There where no need to delete your partitions. Windows would have found them as soon as you loaded the sata drivers. Regardles, it's always a good idea to install windows first because it'll wipe out your mbr so you would probably have to reinstall lilo after the windows install anyway. |
Regarding your other question.

no luck
Well tried all that, no luck. Windows wont recognize my brandnew sata harddrive. guess I'll call dell's sucky support
|
Look at dell's webpage. You can probably download the correct windows drivers and put them on a floppy.
I wasn't completely sure it was F6. Look at what windows asks you to press to load aditional drivers. I think they ask for scsi and that's when to say you want extra drivers. |
1. install XP first. At the appropriate time hit F6 to install a SCSI/RAID driver, put in the disk that should be with your motherboard (google).update your BIOS if there is a new release for your motherboard. Ensure SATA is plugged into correct slot (SATA1), Don't do partions made from linux for XP, XP will make them when installing. If you choose fat32 (vfat) you have easy access from your linux_partition. And if i remember right, you can decide when installing how large you want your partition to be (i hope). So leave what you need for your linux, but don't try to make any linux_partitions from XP.
2.Then you install your linux with Boot loader, just be shure to install your dual boot (f ex) LILO ..to your MBR.. when you get the Q. Good luck. |
