Installing with 2.6 kernel?

Slackware 10.0 was supposed to come with kernel 2.4.26 and kernel 2.6.7... but when I ran the install, it automatically installed 2.4.26 without ever offering me the option of using 2.6.7. How can I get it to use 2.6.7? Also, is there any way I can dual-boot between the two kernels without having to add any more partitions (I currently have /boot / and swap)? I know if I install both kernels with different names in /boot, I can set up LILO to set me choose between them, but how do I get the right modules loading for each one?

the 2.6.7 kernel is in the /test folder on disk2 (I think.) Make a new folder on your system, such as /boot.2.4.26 and move the contents of the current boot folder here. Change your lilo.conf to reflect the new address of the kernel. Then install the 2.6.7 kernel package(s) on the cdrom, the kernel should install in /boot. When you install the modules they are sent to /lib/modules/ and the kernel will only look at the modules relevant to itself.

Again, add another entry to lilo.conf to reflect this new kernel. Be careful that you address the kernel properly. Reboot and cross your fingers.

Thanks!

I can't boot from / or other subdirectories on that partition because my BIOS doesn't look that high in the disk... can I create /boot/2.4.26 and /boot/2.6.7 instead?

What do you mean by "address the kernel properly"?

Do I need to do anything special for alsa to have it deal with two versions of the kernel, or will the proper alsa modules be in each kernel's /lib/modules directory?

by addressing it properly I mean give its location properly, when I first started playin with kernels I kept editing lilo.conf incorrectly and messed up my system a few times.

Here is my lilo.conf:

# LILO configuration file
# generated by 'liloconfig'
#
# Start LILO global section
boot="/dev/hda"
message = /boot/boot_message.txt
prompt
timeout="300"
#append="hdd=ide-scsi"
# Override dangerous defaults that rewrite the partition table:
compact #makes lilo run faster at boot.
change-rules
reset

# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x32k
# vga=790
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x256
# vga=773
# VESA framebuffer console @ 800x600x64k
# vga=788
# VESA framebuffer console @ 800x600x32k
# vga=787
# VESA framebuffer console @ 800x600x256

# VESA framebuffer console @ 640x480x32k
# vga=784
# VESA framebuffer console @ 640x480x256
# vga=769
# End LILO global section
# Linux bootable partition config begins
default=Slack10

image="/boot4.26/vmlinuz"
label="Slack10"
root="/dev/hdb2"
read-only
# Linux bootable partition config ends

image="/hdb1/vmlinuz"
label="Slack7"
root="/dev/hdb1"
read-only
other=/dev/hda1
label="win2k"
# The following are test kernels
image="/boot6.7/vmlinuz"
label="6.7.test"
root="/dev/hdb2"
read-only

I hope this helps.

i think I will be writing up a doc on how to install 2.6.7 during setup... I am determined to install it during setup an dnot install 2.4.26.

I am not far away.. I almost had it done last night but i messed up somewhere and forgot to install the 2.6.7 modules... its funny though mkinitrd never mentioned that it could not find reiserfs module when i ran it
