installing winxp in vmware. host is slack 12.0

hi. how can i install winxp using vmware in slack 12.0? is it like the normal guest OS installation including the creation of VM disk? i saw this site :

http://bedr.se/how-to-install-windows-xp-on-linux.htm

and i dont have the idea IF this is similar in slack's case.

I wouldn't install VMware Player, but rather VMware Server; I have winxp installed in VMware Server on Slackware with no problems whatsoever. You will need to have your kernel source tree installed then register for the free download at VMware Server, download, install, install Windows.

Works fine of the shelf; be sure to read the installation documentation at VMware (nothing too complicated).

If you are using the latest VMware Server and intend to install other Linux as guest OS with SCSI as the disk emulation, you will need to follow the suggestion found in this link:

http://communities.vmware.com/thread...art=0&tstart=0

If you encounter problem with compiling modules for VMware while installing in Slackware, try install VMware-any-any-patch:

http://communities.vmware.com/message/76957

By the way, I remember VMware Server require /etc/pam.d to be exist. Just create this directory if it complains. Other than this, I remember installation is surprisingly simple. Remember to get the serial number from VMware, is free.

yes thanks for the info. actually im already using vmware server in my slackware 12.0 and have installed VL 5.8 SOHO. . I will update this thread on the results of my attempt. thanks :)

edit: i attempted to install winxp.. the message says, NO CD or bootable disk detected. .. BUT when i installed xp before on a separate disk..its bootable. . any ideas?

Hi,

Try this guide:
http://www.howtoforge.com/the_perfec...op_slackware12

Can you provide more details? I have WinXP running in VMware also, but I don't have any problem at all. And FYI, it is actually running in a VMware Server in RHEL before, but after I move to Slackware, I just copied the WinXP folder (in the VMware directory) and everything just work fine, :-)

What is the boot sequence of your VMWare virtual machine? By default the VM boot sequence is usually:
  1. Removable devices
  2. Hard Drive
  3. CD-ROM
  4. Ethernet
In This case, the VM will boot from a CD-ROM CD-ROM only of the VM Hard Disk is not bootable.

Try entering the BIOS of the VM (the key is F2 I believe) and change the boot sequence so that the CD-ROM is at the top of the list.

Hi,

Did you try any other bootable installation disk? Maybe you can try and see, whether the problem come from VMware itself or the media that you are using.

You can also run dd to create an ISO image of your installer, and map your CD/DVD drive directly to the ISO image. I did this a few times for DVD installer (since the system I am using is with a CDROM drive, not a DVD drive).

do you think that vmtools is really needed? as i read in the document vmtools is one factor why your system can be slow. . .

reikyv 10-18-2007 09:11 PM

Hi, just curious...
So what's the problem actually? Mind to share with us? :-p

Is simple, just do 'dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/cdrom.iso' (read the dd manual, 'man dd'). However, is for ISO data, not movie. For movie, you should use mencoder or other CD/DVD-rip tools.

For Windows, yes! I notice performance really improves a lot.

yeah sure. i just followed "regis_n_bits" advise. . i set up BOOT settings.. then chose "connect on power on" option in the CD rom settings.

to ghostdancer.. ok il check first IF i really need vmtools for windows.. actually i installed this just to install apps that is for windows (nokia apps) -- for me to be able to transfer my files from phone to the PC ... actually as i explored windows in vmware the screen is quite wider so i have to adjust the scroll bar of my vmware GUI from time to time. .
