Installing ThinkFinger on ThinkPad T60

To install ThinkFinger drivers, I need libusb-dev and libpam0g-dev packages. I haven't been able to find either slackware or source for those, only debian.

I think you'll have a very hard time to get ThinkFinger to run on Slackware, as Slackware does not support PAM, around which ThinkFinger's authentication modules are based.

You might want to have a look at some of the Slackware extension pages such as this one

I found a Linux-PAM package on linuxpackages.net, but I was told that all other applications wheren't compiled to be used with PAM anyway, so if I wanted to use it with xterm or ssh, I would have to recompile them

That's correct. By installing PAM on your system, you should also replace quite a few other packages. Have a look at some of the other packages available on the server I quoted in the other message - they also have replacements for shadow and ssh and similar packages.

It's really quite "simple" - as there's only one setting in the configure script that compiles these programs with PAM. However, you should note that there's a huge difference between getting a program to compile cleanly, and getting the program to successfully interact with the other components on your systems collectively making up your Slackware distribution. Slackware is IMHO the most solid, stable distribution out there, and it's because the maintainer goes to almost extreme lengths to proof all such solutions before release... (hence the near 6 months of not publishing the -current changelog ;) )

Just passing by concerning the T60 Thinkpad, would you have the wifi working and recognized with the knoppix ? I cannot get internet with wifi since no eth1 is recognized (only eth0)... :(

Doesn't slackware -current (that's RC1 right now) support PAM ? Why not try that ?

frenchn00b: Since this is a Slackware-forum I have no clue on how what Knoppix does, but the wlan0 interface (wireless) works perfectly well with Intel's iwlwifi-drivers (which is what I run). Also, see the latest changelog entry under
extra/intel-wlan-ipw3945: Added kernel patches and support sources for using the Intel ipw3945 wireless drivers. Due to the need to patch the kernel for a newer ieee80211 subsystem, these are all in source form rather than as packages. Consider it an opportunity to learn. :-)
