Installing Stuff.

quick question, before I installed or started to install slack 11, i was using slack 10 on and off, i had installed a few things from time to time but i guess i went about it the messy way and ended up with stuff all over the place.

i was wondering, using libc as an example, if i was to download libc to say /home/myuser/downloads

should I move that to some place in root, then log root and install from root ? or can I just install stuff from my normal user.

I was installing stuff from my normal user but i ended up with a few files all over the place. not very tidy.

If you use installpkg or pkgtool, you will need to be root. If it's a source tar ball, do the first 2 steps as your user and the final step as root through su.

Also, if you are compiling yourself, consider using a tool like checkinstall which will create a Slackware tgz package. Then it will be listed in /var/log/packages and you can remove it easily with removepkg.

Navigate to whatever directory you have any programs to install using konqueror as a normal user. Open a terminal (hit F4), su to root, type pkgtool, this will open the very intuitive slackware package installer. Using this tool you can install packages from the current directory, remove currently installed packages and so on...
