Installing software

I might get some stick for this as i'm aware it's quite daft to ask but i'm going to do it anyway. I'm currently reading the Slackbook, not really understood half of what I read but will read it again once i'm done.

I would like to know how to install software in Slackware 13.37? It doesn't have Firefox and would like to install a browser but would also like to install other programs too. Are there any websites that show me what is available in Slackware?

Hi,
I just started using Slack as well. Check out slackbuilds, I have had luck with that. It's really good, a bit like the FreeBSD ports system.

This describes Slackware's approach to package management and the available package management tools; the pkgtool is the one commonly used to install a Slackbuild once it's compiled:

I can also recommend Slackbuilds.

I have also found that http://pkgs.org/ has a good listing of Slackware packages. If I run out of luck at Slackbuilds, I check there.

The only two sites I can recommend as trusted sites for slackware packages not included with our distro are Robby and Eric's sites (they are slackware developers).

http://rlworkman.net/pkgs/

http://connie.slackware.com/~alien/

Also, as previously mentioned the build scripts at SBo are wonderful.

Another good source is SlackwareŽ Basics.

'Slackware 13.37' does have Mozilla Firefox. What type of install did you choose? Full install is the best way for a newbie.

Would you now consider marking this thread as solved? Just so that it is clear that there is reliable information in here.

What about slacky.eu? Never had a problem with their packages.

I used Slacky before. Had occasionally problems with their packages (sometimes more often, sometimes less often). As I remember, buildscripts were usually ok. But, I haven't tried anything from Slacky since 12.1, I think.

I usually use SBo. But sometimes (when in hurry and installing a new system) I look at Robbies and AlienBOB's packages. I would agree they are the trustiest option. That doesn't mean the others can't be ok, just that YMMV.
