I'm pretty new to Linux, I have experimented with Ubuntu before and decided I wanted to try Slackware Linux.
I'm installing on an old Toshiba Satellite 230CX laptop with this manual:

Everything goes fine, until I try to enable/install pcmcia-support.
I'm using a swap of 64MB in stead of the 32MB from the manual.
When I try to enable PCMCIA-support I get the following message, including a part of the message I should be seeing;

I'm gonna be of very little help here BUT I've never setup the pcmcia port. I just installed the drivers for the necessary cards and I was on my way. Yes I got a similar problem as yours and avoided it.....

My first question is? Are you wanting to enable pcmcia for the install? If so what device do you need for the pcmcia?

If you don't need the pcmcia for the installation then just proceed to configure your hard disk for partitions. Then do the setup.

If you need the pcmcia.dsk for the install from say a network (NIC) then you should make certain that the created pcmcia.dsk is valid.

Looking at the referenced site the laptop has a installed cdrom that is bootable. Therefore you could do a normal install on the laptop.

As for the processor on the laptop, yes it will be slow for kde but xfce will allow you use of the device. I use ibm760s' all the time with slackware and xfce. Sure you don't have all the bells and whistles but the the laptops make good consoles or control device frontends. Real cheap!

Edit: Note the IBM760el is in the same class as the 'Toshiba Satellite 230CX laptop'.

I thought I neede my nic for the instal, like with ubuntu, for some things.
I kinda stopped trying to install Slackware on the old thing, cause it would only give all kinds of errors and crash, By the way, i don't want to have a graphical environment, just a terminal.
That raises another question; How can I make a bare install for Slackware? they don't give an option and since I'm new it's kinda hard to decide what to and what not to install..

You would only need the NIC if you wish to do a NFS install. If you create the pcmcia.dsk and network.dsk then you need to implement as per the install splash screen.

Don't give up so quick! For the older laptops you might want to roll back to a older versions since you just want a terminal. You could roll to Slackware 8.1 for this older hardware.

If you want a minimal install for Slackware 11 then use Alien_Bobs's mini-iso.
If you use eric's mini-iso you could load the desired packages. The install is about 40mb.

I would encourage you to attempt the install and work through the problems. This will be a great learning experience.

You could use a older live cd to work with the hardware to find the needs of the system. Just don't worry about 'X'. You can use the switches available to boot the livecd to get a minimum boot from the options provided. You could use Slax, helix or possibly knoppix.

I was planning to try the install again but without PCMCIA, because that might have been the biggest problem.

This means you need to have packages ready on a local hdd or on a network storage.. or am I wrong?
