Thank you all for the informative replies!

The information you are looking for can be found at

I just thought I would also add that I recently decided to reinstall Slackware on my old IBM TP 600E (400MHz PII 288MB RAM).
I've had Slackware 10.1, 10.2, 11, and now 12 on that box, and Slackware 12 is the first version that detected and handled my soundcard properly out of the box. Also, the DBUS/HAL/udev trio works wonderfully, and with the addition of pmount, makes a really useful feature set.
Before I tried Slackware 12 out on my laptop I gave the newest VectorLinux a go. Vector, to my surprise, did detect my soundcard properly and set it up. However, I didn't care for all the "extras" that Vector has such as how it clears the screen just before a login prompt so you can see an ascii picture at the top. I found the vasm admin tools unecessary and they didn't always do what I wanted. In addition,
with VectorLinux my Cardbus didn't work at all, and my USB only worked if the device was plugged in at bootup, so the extra tools for mounting were useless to me. The start up scripts were very different than Slackware's and I didn't like them as much. What also bothered me is that I didn't have other WM's to choose from such as fluxbox. Finally, I couldn't necessarily use all of my custom Slackware packages.
Needless to say, my latop and I are very happy that I put Slackware 12 on!
Slackware 12 works better than any other OS I have had on that laptop (and I've tried many on it), and this is before compiling a custom kernel!
I'm using fluxbox 1.0, which I compiled using the official slackBuild, with imlib2 support (check slackBuilds.org for an imlib2 build script). I chose not to install the entire KDE set, so I don't have any QT libs slowing me down!
I would definitely recommend anyone looking to install Slackware on a i686 or better/newer machine to try version 12 before an older version!
Edit: I'm using jfs filesystem on my current setup -> typically uses less CPU.
