Installing Slackware and 2.6 kernel

So I decided to install slackware on my laptop, and I want to upgrade it to 2.6 kernel.

Its so old that it doesn't have an integrated NIC and I use a wireless NIC to access the internet through my home wireless network.

Assuming I start from a fresh install, how do I go about upgrading to 2.6? or is there a CD somewhere I can download to install 2.6?

Thanks for the help

You could just download the 2.6 kernel first then put it on a pen drive or burn it to a cd. The do a fresh install (that is assuming you do one) and then copy the kernel source from the media you placed the kernel onto.

You can download the kernel from
http://www.kernel.org/

Make sure the wireless card you have is supported in Linux or through ndiswrapper. You will probably have more challenges getting wireless working that you will installing the new kernel.

After installing Slackware with the default 2.4 kernel, I would get the kernel, kernel modules and alsa driver files from the /testing directory of Slackware 10.2 from any mirror. I would also get the patches and install them before you update the kernel.

After installing the 3 kernel packages, you should make an initrd and modify the lilo.conf file. Clear instructions on how to do this are in the /testing folder. Be sure to run lilo from a command prompt before rebooting with the new kernel. This will install v2.6.13.

Once this installs correctly, you can compile a custom kernel if you need certain device support or download and install a newer kernel (I am running 2.6.17.3 now). 2.6 kernel compiles are very easy in slackware, and there are many how to links in this forum.

When I install a new custom kernel, I leave 2.6.13 available as a fallback in case I do something dumb with the new kernel.

Good luck...

Bob
