Installing slack: new partition
I was wondering if anyone know a partition program that would not only make a new partition but would also move all data so that none of it would be lost after making the new partition. Right now I have XP on my laptop but i want to make a slackware partition. The problem is that if i defrag the drive to move all the data together it shows a large chunk of data near the end of the drive that "Can not be moved". I just want it moved so i can have a large enough partition for me to have a functional slack installation. Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Is there any acutal free space on your harddrive? Or does XP own the whole drive? If thats the case you make have to lose Windows in order to make a parition for slackware. There is a program that Knoppix comes with that can reparition without erasing all your data, I think?

As it is right now the whole drive is XP. Defrag will not move all the data to the "front" of the drive, so I can't safely make another partition without deleting whatever that data is. I guess I *could* just backup my important data and start from scratch but that would be a major headache. I've spent many hours tweaking this installation of XP so that it runs the way I like it. Besides if anyone has installed and patched WoW from scratch knows that a simpler solution is prefered ![Smilie](https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/images/smilies/smile.gif)

Have you tried using gParted or QTParted using a live cd (like Knoppinx or Ubuntu)? I helped my friend install Slackware on his laptop, and the first thing we did was use parted to shrink the existing NTFS partion (for some reason the gui ones didn't work, so we just used the command line). He didn't lose any data and was able to make plenty of room for linux. Note that there is (was) no need to defrag first. Parted takes care of moving all the data around. I'm pretty sure parted is include on the Slack install cd in the live environment. Not positive, though.
