installing slack 11 - modem/packages dilemma...
 

i have slack 10.2 and i want to install slack 11 - here's my questions:

1 - i'm using winmodem lucent, and it works with ltmodem-8.26a driver...if i install 2.6 kernel, will i be able to find driver for modem that supports 2.6 kernel?

2a - if i, during installation, choose to install 2.6 kernel, as i have read, i will have to install some packages that works with 2.6 kernel (alsa, for example), question is - do i have to uninstall already installed packages (example: uninstall alsa package that was installed during installation)

2b - same as above, only difference is that i will install 2.4 kernel during installation, and 2.6 will compile myself


p.s. now i'm searching the web to see if someone has the same dilemma...

For the modem driver, check the LQ-HCL to see if another user has the same/similar modem and kernel. Use Google, and also try Linmodems.org, Linuxant.com, and Winmodems.org.
I have 4 modems here, none of them with Lucent chipsets, but also none of them work for me with 2.6.x.
As for the upgrade to Slack 11, I recommend you:
Go with the stock kernel for simplicity, and then compile your own 2.6 one to your own liking afterwards..
As for installed packages, nothing need be uninstalled/reinstalled, for the new kernel, with the exception perhaps of such self-compiled third-party stuff like modem drivers, video drivers, etc..
ALSA, for example, remains unchanged.
