Unhappy Installing Packages?

How do I get xine-lib-1.1.1.tar.gz to install with pkgtool or installpkg, when it tells me "Cannot install xine-lib-1.1.1.tgz: package does not end in .tgz" Where do I get tgz packages?

xine-lib-1.1.1.tar.gz is likely a source tarball, so you can't use pkgtool on it. You could look at linuxpackages.net or slacky.it (I think) for a binary.tgz, or you could just compile the source tarball that you have.

depending on the version of slackware xine-lib is part of the xap/ series. Slackware 11 includes xine-lib-1.1.2

the thing is u need to first rename it to whatever_the_file_name_is.tgz. then with root privileges do a installpkg xine-lib-1.1.1.tgz.

then if this package is in source form then a directory must have been created in the current directory so cd to the directory & do ./configure && make && make install && make clean. installation done !

if the package is already compiled then u dont need to do anything else AFAIK. good luck.

hmm I hardly think renaming it will do any good .. as thruthfatal already pointed out, most likely this is a source pacakage.

A lot depends on his version of slackware .. xine-lib is included in slackware 10.2/11 as version 1.1.2 ..

for slackware 11 you will find this in slackware/xap/
for slackware 10.2 you will find this in slacware/patches/packages/
