If I start with a fresh installation of Slack 9.1, how easy will it be to get my Nvidia GeForce4 up and working? I have been trying with Mandrake and recompiling kernals and sheesh! I even got the freaking drivers installed but now my XF86Config-4 file is going insane, editing itself on boot!!
Anyways, so how easy is it to install the Nvidia drivers?
STEP 3: Install
Type "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run" to install the driver, then edit your X86Config file as appropriate. See the text README for more detailed instructions.

You know, this question, and other questions about Nvidia, have been asked exactly 156,677,878,466,667,345,678,544,000 times, and that's just on this forum!
Yes, it's simple. Read the README at the nvidia site where you get the .run driver file.
Get out of X.
Run the .run file
Edit /etc/X11/XF86Config per the README
restart X
lol. You have no idea how many times I have had to switch to run level 3 and type that in - seriously. Each time there is a new and mysterious error lurking around the kernel.. I mean corner ;-)
So I take it - the kernel source(s) will be there and nvidia won't complain?
if you are still with your fresh install of Slack 9.1, you have to have the k package selected. If you did not, you can always go back there it's at mnt/cdrom/slackware/k of cd1, type pkgtool, and you will be prompted with the menu for installation for the vanilla kernel of 2.4.22. the slack current tree is now having 2.4.25, so you may want to upgrade to 2.4.25 first then install the nvidia drivers.

mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
im not so sure what you mean by "picked up"..
not sure why oftern times i see this advice on mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom, i usually just type mount /mnt/cdrom will do. fstab knows what am i doing i guess?
