Installing NVidia Drivers - Easy?

If I start with a fresh installation of Slack 9.1, how easy will it be to get my Nvidia GeForce4 up and working? I have been trying with Mandrake and recompiling kernals and sheesh! I even got the freaking drivers installed but now my XF86Config-4 file is going insane, editing itself on boot!!

Anyways, so how easy is it to install the Nvidia drivers?

As per what they claimed:

STEP 3: Install
Type "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run" to install the driver, then edit your X86Config file as appropriate. See the text README for more detailed instructions.

I found it really easy.

You know, this question, and other questions about Nvidia, have been asked exactly 156,677,878,466,667,345,678,544,000 times, and that's just on this forum!

Yes, it's simple. Read the README at the nvidia site where you get the .run driver file.

Get out of X.
Run the .run file
Edit /etc/X11/XF86Config per the README
restart X

(basically)

ding.

(Edit: I think that's gazillion buhzillion)

lol. You have no idea how many times I have had to switch to run level 3 and type that in - seriously. Each time there is a new and mysterious error lurking around the kernel.. I mean corner ;-)

So I take it - the kernel source(s) will be there and nvidia won't complain?

Oh..uh... yeah, you'll need to get the kernel source from one of the CD's and installpkg it, as I recall.

:-)

ok so what exactly do I type in the terminal?

or is there a packager program that I can just load up and search for 2.6.x kernel source? Or what would I search for?

I know these are n00b questions, but to slack I am a n00b. :-D

if you are still with your fresh install of Slack 9.1, you have to have the k package selected. If you did not, you can always go back there it's at mnt/cdrom/slackware/k of cd1, type pkgtool, and you will be prompted with the menu for installation for the vanilla kernel of 2.4.22. the slack current tree is now having 2.4.25, so you may want to upgrade to 2.4.25 first then install the nvidia drivers.

Got it installed, I must say its very nice not to have to configure much in slackware! :-)

However, it seems my CD-Rom drive isn't being picked up (KDE)... any suggetions, comments, acts of congress?

Again I appreciate you helping a Slackin' N00b like me ;-)

Code:
# alsamixer

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
That, unfortunately, isn't working. Though I did get my scroll mouse working, the cd-rom drive is working, Nvidia drivers (hurray!) are working...

Trying to get sound, then I will move on to my last problem :-)
