installing newer software from source when older version installed from a slackbuild

I have HandBrake 0.9.4 installed from Slackbuilds.org, but a new version came out yesterday that I want to install, but it isn't up on slackbuilds yet. Can I install it from source without doing anything to the old install?

When I installed it from slackbuilds, the slackbuild script also installed all the external multimedia libraries that I need. If I use removepkg (or whatever the command is) to remove the old HandBrake before installing the new one, will that also remove the multimedia packages that were installed along with handbrake? They were all built into the same .tgz

On my work computer so I can't do anything with it right now anyway, so maybe a slackbuild will be up when I get home. But thought I'd ask

In a lot of cases you can simply change the version number in the slackbuild, build the package using that, and install it with upgradepkg. I do it all the time; right now I'm running the latest versions of Rekonq and Krusader... neither of which are available at Slackbuilds.org yet.

hm, good idea. I'm doing that now, lets see how it installs.

Also, since the original slackbuild piled all the codecs as well as the software into a single .tgz, will removepkg HandBrake.tgz also remove the codecs that were installed along with it?

got a gtk error while the slackbuild was compiling. Don't feel like fixing it so I think I'll wait til its up on slackbuilds.org
