Installing ACPI as module

I found instructions here about using the bareacpi.i
kernel and they are quite clear.

I have a question though.

Why is it not possible to install acpi 'outside'
of the kernel, just like one installs other
kernel modules that are not part of the kernel source.

This way I don't have to change kernels at all.

What benefit is there in having acpi in the
kernel structure?

Thanks, Meir

Welcome to SLACKWARE

I am not a kernel hacker, but I have just had the same fight as you. However I would expect ACPI needs to be in the kernel as it needs to make direct hardware calls, and that is tha job of the kernel. Managing ACPI can be software, but the hardware monitoring and modification (ie turn off computer) has to be done at a lower level (ie the kernel).
