Installed Slackware64 14.2, video system now erratic, persistent image overlay.

I've searched and not found a similar thread, so either it's an odd problem or I can't search for beans.

I had been using Slackware64 14.1, and bungled a compiler upgrade, so I decided that this was as good a time as any to upgrade to 14.2.

Having done this, I am having a video problem. I am running XFCE4 as my desktop. I am using a Radeon video card that functioned perfectly under 14.1.

My current problem is that, once I start doing more than a few things at once, a "snapshot" of one of my desktops gets grabbed by some element of the system. This snapshot/screenshot will pop up over whatever I am doing at unpredictable intervals. The program I am working will appear to vanish, but what has happened is that the stored screenshot is overlaid on my program. As I move the cursor around, elements of the screen that change state will appear as I pass over them and the state changes. I can recover the whole screen by switching to another desktop and switching back, but this does not last long. It can get so bad that watching a video is impractical because of the flicker as the screenshot overwrites the video, then the next video frame refreshes the screen, then the screenshot pops up again, etc.

The Linux kernel is correctly identifying the video card:

Code:
[ 28.539599] [drm] radeon kernel modesetting enabled.
[ 29.238519] fb: switching to radeondrmfb from VESA VGA

[ 29.497500] radeon 0000:06:00.0: radeon: using MSI.

[ 30.455690] [drm] Initialized radeon 2.43.0 20080528 for 0000:06:00.0 on minor 0
Querying the X log produces this:

Code:
[ 158.406] (II) RADEON(0): Output DVI-0 connected
So X sees the card as the correct type.

I've forgotten the specific model of the card, but if anyone thinks it might be useful I can open the box and get the data.

Again, this same hardware was working perfectly under Slackware64 14.1.

My upgrade method was backing up the boot volume, wiping the partition and installing 14.2, so I doubt that leftovers from 14.1 could be involved.

Does anyone have any ideas? Is there more data I should be collecting?

Thanks.

To find out what GPA you have run this as root:

Code:
lspci | grep -i VGA
Have a look here for trouble shooting:

https://docs.slackware.com/howtos:ha...aphics_drivers

Have a look in the dmesg log and try running:
Code:
dmesg | grep <devicename>
Find out what module the kernel is using for your GPU and dmesg the driver. That might give a glue but look in the dmesg log first.
Drivers are in the output of lsmod.

You might want to add the entire /var/log/Xorg.0.log here as well.

Snapshot can be taken be xscreensaver at regular periods of time, there is also kde application able to do things. Let do this: start system in init 3 mode, in console with xwmconfig change your window manager to soemthing competely X-compatible, I suggest fvwm, start X with startx script, be sure xscreensaver is disabled, look at running processes, maybe you will find there something suspicious. Try to kill as possible manny processes as you can without breaking Xorg and fvwm, You ynow cleaning up the room from all this filthy stuff which (witch?) usually resides in memory.

I read through the log you posted in post #4. You have 2 WARNINGS however I don't know what they mean. Some warnings are considered normal but I don't know if they need to be address or not.

Code:
WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module fbdev
We need someone here at LQ that is good with reading the Xorg.log:-

What's the output of: (run as root)
Code:
lspci | grep -i VGA
Was the "How To's" at Slackware.com helpful?

I appear to have solved the problem. A lot of fiddling seemed to confirm the result that the instability got worse as the number of programs running increased, but no progress was made that way.

I finally had the thought that a newer version of the xf86 ATI driver might be an idea, so I went to the Slackware-current tree and found the xf86-video-ati-7.10.0-x86_64-1.txz package. I installed it, restarted X, and my video has been stable since. There is a slight lag between switching to a desktop with a video program running and the video popping up over the other contents of that desktop. I can live with that given that everything else seems to be back to normal.

Glad to hear that installing the driver solved the issue.

Thanks for the details.
