Be more specific, what's your connection?
If it's broadband, have you remembered to check dhcp lookup in xconfig, menuconfig, or whatever config you're using?? And of chourse you need the right driver for your network-card, if you dont know, post the name, and i'll trie to find out what you should use...
If memory serves me, 2.6.x doesn't have support for any 3Com cards by default (odd, since this is arguably the most common NIC type out there).
All you would need to do is go into the configuration and enable the driver for whatever card type you have. From my experience the 3Com "Typhoon" driver is going to be your best bet if you don't know what 3Com card you have.
Dude - you definitely need to provide more info: is your NIC a separate card, or built into the mobo? What exact hardware is it? What distro are you using? When you were compiling the kernel, did you enable support for your card? The more complete your description is, the better quality answers you will get. Good luck with it. -- J.W.
Originally posted by a2carat I just installed it a couple of hours ago and now I have no network (internet) any ideas of what could it be it was working fine before with 2.4.22
I restarted initd but nothing happened
thanks

This was my first attempt at compiling a kernel. I had the same problem with 2.6.3 and a 3Com NIC. Compiled the kernel about four times and it still wouldn't detect the NIC. Went back and compiled 2.4.24, just to see if I could do it, and networking was fine. Used the config file for 2.4.24 to configure 2.6.4 and it detects the NIC. I'm not adept enough at Linux to know why this happened. Now I have to get netatalk to work with 2.6.4.
my card is not integrated iits a realtek something like that forget the model. I used the .config file from the kernel I was using, every thing was working fine, 2.4.22
If you have not "network" as you say, the most likely your kernel does not have the support compiled in, or available as a module, for the hardware you have installed in your pc.
use the command "lspci" and "dmesg" to search for your hardware that was autodetected and probed, then make sure when recompiling your kernel that it has support for those hardware types.
