installation problems

I just installed slackware 10.0 on /dev/hda3, alongside my windows xp home install, which is only /dev/hda2. I installed KDE as my default windowmanager. I then setup LILO with the auto config, and installed it to the beginning of my linux partition, rather than installing to the MBR. I then got done with the setup and tried to boot linux... but it never gave me any options at boottime to select which os I wanted. So I went into cfdisk and changed the bootable partition from /dev/hda2 (windows) to /dev/hda3 (linux), and rebooted. But the same thing happened, no options and XP just starts up. I checked back in cfdisk and somehow /dev/hda2 is boot again... along with /dev/hda3. I then tried the boot floppy I had made during install... it said that its not a boot floppy and to restart. I then was able to boot in from the Slackware install cd 1 but I couldn't get into X, I tried startx and it gave me an error... something about no screen or display. I tried running xorgconfig but I'm not sure about my monitor sync value and some other options. I would just prefer to log in normally at boottime so that it would automatically start in X. Any ideas how to resolve my LILO issue and my X issue?
Thanks.

Did you manage to just boot the installation (and not
run set-up) or did you actually boot the installed slack
of hda3 using the install CD? Chances are that X won't
start because it may be using fbdev which wouldn't be
loaded if you start the machine from CD... just edit /etc/lilo.conf
and change
boot = /dev/hda

to
boot = /dev/hda3
and re-run lilo ... you should then be presented with lilo's
boot-options on reboot.

Cheers,
Tink

P.S.: Your thread title sucks, pick something more
descriptive next time, like "can't boot Slack after
successful install, lilo-settings?" ... ;)

Thanks, I'll give that a try. (sorry about the thread title... I'm usually better at that).
could I just use pico or something to edit /etc/lilo.conf? I suppose I could try running liloconfig again too.

Alright, I got booted into lilo by putting it on a bootfloppy. But I still cannot get startx working, I ran xorgconfig and took my best guess at all the settings, trying to be conservative. Anyway here is the error when I try and run startx as root (sorry about the flash):

I'm getting this same error. I installed Redhat9 and it boots up to a prompt and leaves me there. What do I do to get a GUI working?

The only thing I can think of is I have an xorg.conf file from my old topologilinux install... maybe i could cp that over and it would work... its worth a try.

Try XF86config..................

Fortunately I got everything working. I wrote lilo to a floppy and that works.. so all I have to do to run slackware is stick it in. X was a pain but I was able to get it working by copying the xorg.conf file from my old topologilinux install (and modifying it for the old nvidia drivers) into /etc/X11/ in Slackware. After a few trys all it took was startx to get KDE going. Now I'll just have to do some swaret updating and update my video driver.
Thanks for all your help!

swaret ...

/me still doesn't get why anyone would want to trust someone other than Pat with putting packages for slack together ;D
